Photography & Bare Life

Open Lecture

TJ Demos is currently working on the book-length study Migrations: Contemporary art in the age of globalization. This Open Lecture is concerned with an aspect of his present research in this area, the photographic representation of refugees considered in relation to Giorgio Agamben’s notion of bare life, of life stripped of political representation. The lecture will concentrate on the work of Algerian artist Yto Barrada and the Palestinian Ahlam Shibli. ‘What is bare life?’ is one of three leitmotifs proposed for the forthcoming Documenta 12.
