Jonathas de Andrade
Resident Artist - Gasworks Artist 2011

Jonathas de Andrade is the 2011 Gasworks artist, as part of the TrAIN/Gasworks residency program. He will be here from 3rd April to 26th June 2011.
Brazilian Artist, Jonathas de Andrade, works with photography, installation, and film to document the shifting terrain of private narratives within larger social spaces, exploring such themes as failed modernity and cultural amnesia.
In his work, the act of photographing represents a crucial creative tool, but also as a historic device, a medium spanning fiction and document that makes possible the dialogue between action, research, architecture, and state census.
Exploring social and cultural conditions of place, de Andrade employs Investigative processes such researching, mapping and surveying – using historical and archaeological documents and found artefacts to gently weave new fictions. His work is none the less about individual memory- personal experiences that start to resemble a collective one.
Jonathas de Andrade lives and works in Recife, Brazil. His residency is the result of a partnership between TrAIN and Gasworks, a contemporary art organisation based in South London, housing twelve artists’ studios and offering a programme of exhibitions and events, artists’ residencies, international fellowships and educational projects.
