MA Theory & Practice of Transnational Art

The one-year Theory & Practice of Transnational Art MA offers an emphasis and structure particularly suitable for those interested in commencing MPhil or PhD research after completion. Such students are supported through the process of applying for a further research degree.

As an MA by independent project, Theory & Practice of Transnational Art is also suited to arts graduates and practitioners who are interested in developing a wider contextual understanding, strong research skills, and an awareness of professional issues.

As a prospective student you can apply with a practice-based project - or you can apply with a proposal for a solely written research project. Individual study is complemented by seminars, lectures, tutorials and workshops; specialist lectures are delivered by the scholars and practitioners attached to the TrAIN research centre, and are organised under themes including: Exhibiting the Nation; Identity, Authenticity and Materials; and Migr ation and the Context of the Transnational. A series on Methodologies of the Transnational provides the necessary tools for the production of your final submission.

The MA Course Director is Dr Michael Asbury, and all core members of TrAIN contribute to seminar teaching.

TrAIN Core Member - Senior Research Fellow

I was born in Teresopolis, in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro, the son of British missionaries. After twenty years in Brazil I came to England to study engineering but fortunately to myself (and others) changed course and went on to complete an MA in The Study of Contemporary Art at Liverpool University and a PhD in the History and Theory of Art at The London Institute (now UAL).
