Sandra Schaefer
Open Lecture
Image Sandra Schaefer
In the presentation TrAIN/Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral artist in residence Sandra Schäfer will discuss hers and Elfe Brandenburger’s film Passing the Rainbow. The film deals with performative strategies to undermine the rigid gender norms in Afghan society: on the level of cinematographic stagings, in political work and in everyday life. Life and character collide and overlap, as do playfulness and activism. The protagonists adjust the production of the film to their own conditions in order, within that framework, to participate in a public statement. They act as co-producers of the image, shaping the content of scenes and moving in and out of the role of director. Sandra Schäfer will show clips from the film and explain their working methods. Passing the Rainbow is part of an ongoing cooperation with theoricians, filmmakers, actresses and activists in Afghanistan, as well as Iran, Spain and Germany including installations, film festivals, books and exhibitions.
