Paul Goodwin
Open Lecture
Lecture by guest speaker, Paul Goodwin, Director of the Re-Visioning Black Urbanism project -based at the Centre for Urban and Community Research, Goldsmiths College, University of London.
Paradoxes of Black Urbanism This lecture addresses themes explored in the Revisioning Black Urbanism Project at Goldsmiths College since 2006. ‘Black Urbanism’ seeks to explore the way that multiple cultures of ‘blackness’ have shaped and are shaping contemporary urban life in the West. Drawing on elements of urban theory, cultural geography and architecture, the lecture will explore the paradoxical entanglements of globalisation, images and practices of ‘blackness’ (in urban protest movements, music and visual art practices) and shifting notions of what it means to be ‘urban’ in places like London, Paris and New Orleans since the 1990s.
