Mami Kataoka

Mami Kataoka is international curator at the Hayward, London, where she curated “Laughing in a Foreign Language” (2008) an exhibition exploring a role of humour in diverse cultures. Splitting her time between two cities, she also works as senior curator at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo.
Her exhibitions at the Mori since 2003 include “Roppongi Crossing: New Visions in Contemporary Japanese Art 2004”, “MAM Project 001: Santiago Cucullu” (2004), “MAM Project 002: Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba”(2004) , “Ozawa Tsuyoshi: Answer with Yes and No!” (2004), “MAM Project 003: ROR” (2005), “Follow Me!: Chinese Art at the Threshold of the New Millennium”(2005) and “All about Laughter: Humor in Contemporary Art” (2007).
Prior to the Mori, she was chief curator at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery where the exhibitions she curated include “Releasing Senses” (inaugural exhibition, 1999), “Tatsuo Miyajima: Mega Death”(2000), “Encounter” (2001), “Rirkrit Tiravanija” (2002) and collaborative projects included “Territory: contemporary art from the Netherlands” (2000), “My home is yours, your home is mine” (2001), “JAM: Tokyo-London” (2001), “Under Construction: New Dimensions in Asian Contemporary Art” (2002). She was one of the curators for “Beautiful New World: contemporary culture from Japan,” a comprehensive introductory show of Japanese culture for a Chinese audience in Beijing and Guangzhou, organized by the Japan Foundation in 2007.

The TrAIN Open series is a forum for invited speakers to present exhibition, publication, and research projects in the form of lectures, discussions and screenings.
Taking place at fortnightly intervals on Tuesday evenings during the academic term, the series is open to the public, as well as staff and students across the University of the Arts London.
