Adding an emphasis not explicit in our own use of the term, Carey Young’s work addresses the ‘transnational’ at the level of business practice and the spread of neoliberalism. Her work looks at the translation of ideas and languages between the cultural sphere and the realm of transnational business and law. Deeply critical of neoliberalism and the inherent spread of the marketplace into every sphere of life, she sees the systems of art as tending towards complicity, but also looks for evidence of difference, of non-comprehension, and of forms of dissent. Young’s work uses found tools, language and training processes from the worlds of the multinational corporation and global law firm and alters them within an artistic context.

Carey Young was awarded TrAIN Associate Project (Tap) seed funding for the production of a new video work to be shot on location in Hungary. Featuring the artist in character as a confident corporate businesswoman, the proposed video will explore ideas around propaganda and ancient Greek forms of rhetoric, and takes as its context the collapse of the former Soviet Union, and its ‘overthrow’ by the global spread of capitalism. The video will be shot in Budapest’s Statue Park, the open-air tourist site to which Communist-era statues are now relegated; the particular location of the park, corralled at the edge of the city and surrounded by electricity pylons and scrubby grassland, is itself indicative of the formation of national identity after “Soviet occupation”.
