TrAIN Associate Project Partner

Dunhill and O’Brien (Mark Dunhill and Tamiko O’Brien) have been working collaboratively since 1998. In 2005 they established collabarts.org as a resource and platform for artists, theorists and art students interested in collaborative art practice.

Dunhill and O’Brien will receive TrAIN Associate Project (Tap) support in the development of a project addressing collaborative practice within the context of international residency programmes. With Kyoto-based artist Toshihiro Komatsu, Dunhill O’Brien will extend this area of investigation to consider how collaborative practice might be critically embedded within the circuit of international residency and exchange.

By offering their services as cultural guides, technical assistants, catalogue-writers and curators, Dunhill O’Brien have devised a means of collaboration that will affect Komatsu’s residency and exhibition at Wimbledon College of Art. In turn, the collaborative parameters of Dunhill O’Brien’s ‘return’ residency in Kyoto will be devised by Komatsu. Focusing on the relationship between Japan and the UK, the project will consider how cultural etiquette and expectation impacts upon collaborative practice. In its wider context it will address and test the presupposed values and practical experiences involved in programmes of international exchange.
