Claudia Wegener

TrAIN Associate Project Partner

Claudia Wegener’s most recent project, No-Go-Zones, involved audio workshops and interactive broadcasts with young people living in South London. As an outcome of this project and its international dissemination, she has been invited to join the Centre for Civil Society (University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa) as a Visiting Scholar, and to present a Harold Wolpe Memorial Lecture on her work. TrAIN Associate Project (Tap) seed funding will support her Visiting Scholarship and allow for the research and development of a collaborative radio archiving project.

During her time in Durban she will explore the aims of RASA radio, a community-lead media project, broadcasting in Soweto in 2005. The visit will help to establish the basis for a proposed project to recover the archives of RASA and to consider the development of collective, community-driven radio in South Africa and its implications for her own work with ‘audio communities’ in the UK. The project will also sustain an ongoing relationship with peers in South Africa, established after a residency in Johannesburg in 2005, and continued via collaborative audio and exhibition projects.
